As an aviation electronics technician in the United States Marine Corps, Matthew Ebert experienced two separate deployments to Iraq and the Persian Gulf. After facing the challenge of serving his country, Ebert says he was ready for a new goal to achieve. That’s why he chose to become a mechanical engineering major in University of Kentucky College of Engineering.
Put Angelo Stekardis behind the wheel and he’s one happy man. Instead of flying from Louisville to Southern California, where Stekardis would begin a summer-long internship, he and his father preferred to make the 31-hour cross-country drive. When the internship ended three months later, Stekardis and his girlfriend took a 48-hour “scenic route” home.
Once again, students from the University of Kentucky College of Agriculture, Food and Environment put together a successful team that built one of the top entries at the recent American Society of Agricultural and Biological Engineers International Quarter-Scale Tractor Student Design Competition.
Sue Nokes is the chair of the University of Kentucky Department of Biosystems and Agricultural Engineering, but she’s also an acclaimed researcher and teacher. Recently, the American Society of Agricultural and Biosystems Engineers named Nokes a Fellow at their annual meeting in Orlando, Florida.
“If it hadn’t been for an engineering scholarship, Stan Pigman would never have been able to enroll at the University of Kentucky in 1977,” observes Mike Richey, UK vice president for philanthropy. “And if it hadn’t been for his persistence in study and special help from his professors, Stan would never have graduated with a degree that prepared him for the extraordinary success he has experienced.
More than 100 faculty members from all 14 Southeastern Conference (SEC) universities will take part in the 2016-17 SEC Faculty Travel Program, the league office announced Oct. 6. Of the more than 100 participants, nine are faculty at the University of Kentucky. The program, in its fifth year, provides support for selected individuals to collaborate with colleagues at other SEC member institutions.
ECE Professors Dr. Larry Holloway and Dr. Yuan Liao have been awarded a grant entitled: “STEP/FEEDER: Strategic Expansion to Achieve GEARED Goals” from the Department of Energy’s GEARED (Grid Engineering for Accelerated Renewable Energy Deployment) program.
ECE Professors Adams, Lu and Young have been awarded a grant from the National Aeronautics and Space Administration entitled “Fast Computational Electromagnetic Methods for GEMINI”.
ECE Professor Dr. Himanshu Thapliyal has received an award from the Kentucky Science and Energy Foundation entitled “Energy-Efficient Digital Signal Processor Based on Reversible Nanomagnetic Logic”.
Angela Gutierrez, a doctoral student at the University of Kentucky Superfund Research Center was one of six promising trainees nationwide awarded K.C. Donnelly Externship Award Supplements to fund their research at other institutions.
