Seales honored with UK Libraries Medallion for Intellectual Achievement

University of Kentucky Libraries has honored W. Brent Seales, Ph.D., the Stanley and Karen Pigman Chair of Heritage Science and Professor of Computer Science, as the 2025 recipient of the UK Libraries Medallion for Intellectual Achievement.

Suzanne Smith receives Sally Ride Excellence in Education Award

The American Astronautical Society (AAS) has named Suzanne Weaver Smith, Ph.D., as the recipient of the 2024 Sally Ride Excellence in Education Award, recognizing her four decades of extraordinary dedication to student-centered and innovative partnerships between academia and industry.

2025 Pigman College of Engineering Faculty Awards

The annual Pigman College of Engineering Faculty Awards ceremony was held on May 1 at Malone's Prime and Events. Awards were given in the areas of research, service and graduate studies.

IEEE FIRST Robotics Mentors

For the first time, several engineering students from the Institute of Electrical and Electronics Engineers (IEEE) student branch at the University of Kentucky came together to coach and mentor a high school FIRST Robotics Competition (FRC) team. Three UK students mentored about 10 high school students to build a robot from January through the end of March. The team then traveled to the Smoky Mountains Regional Competition in Sevierville, Tenn. from  April 2-5.

Pigman College of Engineering hosts first ever Capstone Design Showcase

On April 28, the University of Kentucky Pigman College of Engineering hosted its first ever Capstone Design Showcase in the Gatton Student Center.  The event showcased 56 Capstone projects from over 200 students from seven engineering disciplines. Featured disciplines were biomedical engineering, biosystems and agricultural engineering, chemical engineering, civil engineering, computer science, electrical and computer engineering, engineering technology and materials engineering.

Electrical and computer engineering students compete in American Society of Naval Engineers competition

Three Capstone Design teams from the Department of Electrical and Computer Engineering traveled to Virginia Beach, Virginia to present their electric driven remote-controlled boats during the annual American Society of Naval Engineers (ASNE) Promoting Electric Propulsion (PEP) Boat competition from April 15-18. 

Zach Agioutantis named 2025-26 University Research Professors

Zach Agioutantis, department chair and professor for the department of Mining Engineering, was named University Research Professors for the 2025-26 academic year.

EduceLab unveiled as UK’s gateway to next-generation heritage science

Made possible by a $14 million infrastructure grant from the National Science Foundation, EduceLab is the university’s bold vision for next-generation heritage science. The lab was unveiled during a “soft opening” last week — launching a new era of discovery, education and innovation at the intersection of the humanities, engineering and data science.
